SAN LUIS — The community turned out on July 1 to support the American Legion Post No. 142’s fundraiser. Funds will be used to complete the inside renovations — adding a kitchen and bar.

Several raffles were offered — for bottles of wine or to win one of two firearms. Post 142 connected with Holy Cross Winery, a monastery in Canon City, and will start selling their wine.

Bruce Nagel, of the American Legion shares the first time they found the winery and described the different types of wine.

"We went camping a few years ago and discovered the winery. The people are friendly, the prices are reasonable, and it is the only wine we drink now."

There was wine tasting at the event with four bestsellers. People voted on their favorites from Apple Blossom, "a dessert, fruity wine,” American Riesling, a "dinner wine," Rose Table Wine, "which could be an appetizer or dinner wine" and Merlot, "also a dinner wine."

Aaron Hernandez was the deejay. Hamburgers and hotdogs were available.

Post 142 is now available for rent. Call Commander Wade Eppler at 719-298-8433, if interested in renting the facility. Eppler hopes to have dartboard and pool tournaments. He also plans to have movie nights in the field next to the post.

In the future, Post 142 will hold a fundraiser to fix the exterior of the building.
