CONEJOS —The foundations of faith, culture, language, heritage and legacy are being honored by members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, calling themselves “Los Pobladores.”
As settlers, their ancestors took these beliefs to heart and they are asking that these values be supported in the project consisting of an outdoor chapel and prayer labyrinth that represents the mysteries of the Rosary.
An adobe campaign is ongoing to build the seven-foot-high wall that will surround the chapel.
This memorial is being built next to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Conejos, the oldest parish in Colorado.
Anyone wanting to purchase an adobe in memory of a loved one or someone special who has passed, may contact any of the committee members or visit the church office to sign up.
Any donation wil be accepted and a contribution of $100 or more will entitle the contributor to a memorial plaque inscribed with his or her information.
Board member Martha Abeyta said checks for the memorial adobe plaque also may be sent to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, P.O. Box 305, Antonito, CO 81120.
Checks must be made out to El Santuario de Los Pobladores.
Everyone is asked to include their contact information (including e-mail address) so they can be contacted at a later date to get details of what the inscription should read.
The board wants to get going with some of the wall before cold weather and then finish in spring or summer.
Board members are Gary Sandoval, Elliott Salazar, Paula Espinoza, Martha Abeyta, Leonard Quintana, Alfonzo Abeyta and Wanda Patterson.
