An efficient kinetic energy device can mean a healthy prize for its builder when this year's La Jara Smash Fest takes place. This could involve a catapult, tribuchet or giant slingshot which will hurl a pumpkin the farhest. Shown is a huge, basic catapult. This year's Smash Fest will be Oct. 27 at 312 South Main Street in La Jara. It will begin at 10 a.m. with a pumpkin patch for children and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.  there will be a decorating contest as well as a carving contest for youngsters ages 10-15 and 16-18.  Trunk or Treat will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. followed by Pumpkin Chunkin at 1 p.m. Cash prizes are $1,000 for the adult division and $500 for the junior division. Cash prizes will be $25 for winners of each division of the carving/decorating contest.
