Falcon females make four in a row

LA JARA — At Centauri High School last Friday, the host Falcons (8-1) took care of business, dispatching Sanford (4-2) by a score of 53-31.
Both teams entered the contest well ranked in their respective classes. The Falcons held the No. 3 spot in 3A basketball and Sanford occupied the 15th place in the 2A class.  The Falcons entered Friday after having strung together three straight wins.  Sanford entered with a win over Escalante from Dec. 14th with hopes of making it two in a row.
However when play started both teams looked eager to start their holiday break instead, in the first quarter both squads combined for just 16 points.  Sanford senior Lauren Canty’s four points boosted the away team to their 9-7 lead after the first quarter.
With five minutes remaining in the second quarter Centauri tied the game at 11 points. From there they would proceed to run away with the game. Melissa Wilson’s four free throws in the second frame helped the Falcons take the lead after two going to the locker rooms with a 17-13 lead. Wilson was perfect from the charity stripe on the night and would lead Centauri in scoring with 14 points.
With a four-point lead after two, Centauri’s Mia Garcia put up nine points in the third quarter alone to add distance to the Falcons' advantage entering the final frame.
Garcia went five-of–seven from the free throw line and totaled 11 points on the night.
The fourth quarter was the most productive of the night for Sanford with 11 team points led by five from freshman Cheyenne Caldon, but Sanford couldn’t close the distance and would fall on the road.  Caldon’s 9 points led Sanford for the night.
Both teams will enjoy some down time for the holidays.

When they return Sanford will host Ellicot (3-1) on January 4th. Centauri’s girl’s come back January 11th for a home meeting against Monte Vista (2-4).
