Crash near Alamosa claims life of Fort Garland woman

A two-vehicle crash west of Alamosa on Thursday afternoon resulted in one fatality. The driver of the 2014 Edge, right, died as a result of the accident, and the passenger in her car was transported with serious injuries.

ALAMOSA—On Thursday, July 5 at 2:58 p.m., a black 2014 Ford Edge driven by Peggy Fitzpatrick, 80, of Fort Garland, was eastbound on Colorado Hwy 160 near milepost 229 when it drifted into the westbound traffic lane. The Ford Edge collided with a 2016 Volvo Semi truck and trailer driven by Michael Thurston, 49, of Moreno Valley, Calif., which was traveling westbound on Colorado Hwy 160.
Peggy Fitzpatrick and passenger Karen Fitzpatrick, 67, of Fort Garland, were both transported to SLV Health in Alamosa for their injuries. Peggy Fitzpatrick was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Karen Fitzpatrick sustained serious injuries.
Michael Thurston was not injured in the crash.
Speed or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash. The crash is still under investigation.
