Doris Irene Jackson, 89

MONTE VISTA‚—Doris Irene Jackson passed away peacefully at her home in Monte Vista on Feb. 2, 2018 and was received into the presence of the Lord.

Doris Irene Jackson was born to Pearl and Oma Mae Ratliff Gunnels on Jan. 19, 1929 in Elmer, Mo. She and her family moved from Missouri and arrived in Monte Vista on her first birthday on Jan. 19, 1930.

Doris started working at Bechtel Drug Store as a “soda jerk” at 16 years of age. While working at the soda fountain, she met the love of her life B.F. Jackson, Jr., whom she married on Dec. 22, 1946, and they were happily married for 69 years. Doris graduated from Rio Grande County High School in 1948.  After graduating from high school, she continued to work at Bechtel Drug Store and Burns Pharmacy for 47 years, always enjoying all the people she met.

Doris made the best pies and won a blue ribbon at the State Fair for her cherry pie. She continued to make pies, and that became a favorite family tradition. Doris was an avid baker; it was one of her favorite things to do for her family. Her pies, and dinner rolls were always a family favorite. The family always looked forward to gatherings partly because of her amazing cooking.

Doris had many hobbies she loved; including playing bridge with her friends, board games, putting puzzles together with her family, fishing at Santa Maria Reservoir, gardening and growing beautiful flowers, doing needlepoint work (of which she gave these beautiful creations to family members) and she even taught 4-H sewing for several years.

She loved spending time with her family and friends creating memories (especially her chuckle) for a lifetime that will always be cherished by everyone who knew and loved her.

Doris is survived by her daughter Sherrie (Robert) Hagedorn, of Fountain, Colo.; son Robbie (Roxie) Jackson of Alamosa; two grandchildren, Brent (Chrystal) Hagedorn, of Fountain and Kendra Hagedorn of Canberra, Australia; step grandchildren Kelli Shawcroft and Sarah (Ted) Valdez, both of Alamosa; three great grandchildren, Mason, Jerimiah and Brooklynn Hagedorn, as well as six step great grandchildren and her canine companion Punkin.

She was preceded in death by her husband B.F. Jackson, Jr., her mother and father Pearl and Oma Mae Gunnels, her mother and father-in-law Frank and Essie Jackson, her grandson Greg Hagedorn and brothers Acie and Ellis Gunnels.

A memorial service to honor her life will be held Thursday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church, in Monte Vista. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice del Valle through Rogers Family Mortuary. The family would like to express their eternal gratitude to Hospice del Valle, especially to Amy, Tess and Kelly.
