Falcons, Pirates split doubleheaader

MONTE VISTA — In both baseball teams’ second crack at league play Monte Vista hosted Centauri at Adrian M. Guitterez Memorial baseball field. The Falcons took game one by a score of 10-4 while the host Pirates claimed game two 3-2.
Monte Vista’s Pirates fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 10-4 loss to Centauri on Saturday. Centauri scored on two errors, and a single by Zach Martin in the second inning.
The Monte Vista Pirates Varsity struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Centauri, giving up ten runs in total.
Centauri continued the offense in the second inning. An error scored one run for Centauri.
The Pirates would get a burst of their own tallying three runs in the third inning. The Pirate offense was led in the inning by Brycen Hotz and Trent Anderson, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs.
Martin Garcia led things off on the hill for Centauri. He lasted four innings, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out seven.
Tucker Jones started the game for Monte Vista. He lasted six innings, allowing seven hits and nine runs while striking out nine and walking zero. Daniel Vargas threw one inning in relief.
Zach Castro went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Pirates in hits. Castro led Monte Vista with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with eight stolen bases.
Centauri totaled ten hits in the game. Jordan Martin, Martin, Zach Buhr, and Bennie Chacon all had multiple hits for the Falcons. Martin led Centauri with three hits in five at bats.
Game two was led by defense. Monte Vista would take the lead in scoring immediately when Jarren Chavez got home on a pitch that got past the catcher to make it 1-0 Pirates.
Centauri would answer in the second inning when Bennie Chacon sent one to center field to get Zach Martin home evening it all up at 1 apiece.
The bottom of the second is where the Pirates would reclaim the lead. Trent Anderson singled to center field scoring Tristen Holder putting Monte Vista up 2-1. The one run lead would persist late into the game as the Pirates offense slowed and though Falcons were getting men on base they weren’t scoring.
The Falcon’s persistence paid dividends in the sixth inning when Cimmaron Mestas doubled to score Martin for his second run of the game. Now the pressure was back on the Pirates who had not gotten a runner on base since the second inning.
Baby steps, first step was a single from Brycen Hotz in the bottom of the sixth.
Though Hotz would be stranded there the progress continued in the seventh. Anderson would lead off with a single and would be scored by Casin Holder with a walk off single.
Hotz was the winning pitcher for Monte Vista. He allowed four hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out seven.
Martin took the loss for Centauri.
He surrendered three runs on four hits over six and a third innings, striking out four.
Anderson led Monte Vista with two hits in three at bats.
