Fort Garland shooting sends one to hospital, another to jail


FORT GARLAND —  One individual was shot and another arrested following an incident early Friday, March 29 in Fort Garland, according to sheriff's reports.
The Costilla County Sheriff was dispatched at 1:15 a.m. to the 500 block of Miranda Street in reference to a shooting and arrived to find one adult male who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers from the Colorado State Patrol, Blanca Marshal’s Office and Conejos County Sheriff assisted and were able to secure the residence with the suspect, Abundo Martinez, inside.
Due to the nature of the incident, the Alamosa Police Department SWAT Team was dispatched to assist and, at approximately 4 a.m., phone negotiations led to the surrender of the suspect without incident.
Martinez was taken to the Costilla County Jail in San Luis and will be advised of his charges.
There is no threat to the public and Costilla County Sheriff R. Scott Herrera expresses thanks to agencies involved with assisting on this call.
