Jack-knifed Semi collides with snowplow, blocks road

RIO GRANDE COUNTY —  A semi-trailer collided with a Rio Grande County snowplow two miles east of Del Norte early Thursday morning after several inches of snow fell in the valley overnight.

The jack-knifed semi-truck blocked the road for several hours while local law enforcement officials rerouted traffic.

The accident occurred sometime before 8 a.m., according to available information. Trooper Houde with the Colorado State Patrol reported that two snowplows were working on Highway 112 near Del Norte when one of the plows went off the road.

The second snowplow driver was attempting to bring his fellow driver back onto the road when he was struck by the semi-truck driver.

Houde commented that the semi-truck driver probably was driving too fast and didn’t see the snowplow in time.

The snowplow operators were not injured. The semi-truck driver was transported to Rio Grande Hospital with a broken leg and is in stable condition, according to Trooper Houde.
