Man arrested after allegedly shooting at wife and setting home on fire

COSTILLA COUNTY — A 53-year-old man was arrested after allegedly shooting at his wife and setting a house on fire on Dec. 19, according to the Costilla County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 19, Costilla County Sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic violence call on Road H in Mesita.

Deputies found a woman outside of a residence, who was hiding behind a wall. She told the deputies she had been shot at by her husband who was identified as Christopher W. Slatton, 53.

Deputies reported attempting to contact Slatton, who barricaded himself inside the home and refused to come out. At some point, Slatton allegedly set the home on fire, causing it to be destroyed. At some point, Slatton exited the home.

Deputies reportedly searched nearby vehicles and adjacent buildings for Slatton but did not find him.

On Dec. 21, Costilla County Sheriff's deputies reportedly returned to the burned home to search for Slatton and found him in a nearby garage. Slatton was then taken into custody without incident.

Slatton was charged with suspicion of first-degree attempted murder, fourth-degree arson, false imprisonment, and felony menacing. Additional charges may be added as the case is still under investigation, the sheriff's office reported.
