New solar array offers utility savings

ROMEO— Clean Energy Collective (CEC) is constructing a solar array in Conejos County that can be used to offset electrical costs for Xcel customers in Conejos and the adjoining counties of Alamosa, Costilla and Rio Grande.
CEC already has the funding to build the facility and meters are installed. The collective will be compensated through a portion of the energy savings each participant realized.
A contract with Xcel includes construction of a two-megawatt solar array on 15 acres outside Romeo that could also serve Xcel customers in adjacent counties.
It will generate power, which Xcel will buy, and participants will benefit from solar reward credits, a percentage of which will go back to CEC.
Customers will sign a 20-year agreement with Clean Energy Collective, but if for some reason they have to back out or move from the area, they can transfer the agreement to someone else.
Other benefits include no solar arrays on customers’ properties or costs for maintaining the system, Clean Energy Collective maintains the system out of its cut.
