Officer involved in shooting, suspect at large

Fernando Vigil

CONEJOS/COSTILLA COUNTIES— On Saturday, May 4 at approximately 10 p.m., law enforcement in the area of Antonito, Colo. were given information concerning Fernando Vigil, a subject with several outstanding felony warrants for his arrest and a history of violent tendencies. Law enforcement, including the Colorado State Patrol and Conejos County Sheriff’s Office, were given information that Vigil was in and around the town of Antonito. A Colorado State Trooper located the vehicle in which Vigil was suspected to be traveling.

The state trooper along with Conejos County deputies attempted to stop the vehicle.  The vehicle accelerated and attempted to elude law enforcement. While attempting to elude, the subject’s vehicle collided with a Conejos County Sheriff’s deputy vehicle and made its way eastbound on Conejos County Road G. The subject vehicle accelerated far above the speed limit and became reckless while traveling on County Road G toward the Lobato Bridge at the Conejos/Costilla County line.

The state trooper was able to initiate a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI), which caused the subject’s vehicle to spin out and roll onto its top. The state trooper along with Conejos Deputies attempted to follow up with the driver for an arrest, when shots were fired from the location of the subject’s vehicle at the state trooper. The state trooper was able to return fire at the subject.

Law Enforcement were successful at apprehending a female suspect who had fled on foot from the subject vehicle. The female suspect resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody. Neither the trooper nor the suspect were injured by the exchange of gunfire.

Christina Cano was booked at the Conejos County Jail on several outstanding warrants.  Charges are pending regarding the current pursuit and shooting. The investigation is still ongoing and is being handled by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Several law enforcement agencies assisted, including the Colorado State Patrol, Conejos County Sheriff’s Office, Costilla County Sheriff’s Office, Antonito Police Department, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The subject originally believed to be in the pickup was not located at the scene.  Fernando Vigil has not been apprehended and his whereabouts are unknown.
