Remains remain a mystery

SAN LUIS — Human remains found by some young hunters Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, are as yet unidentified and were reportedly there from three to six months, according to law enforcement reports. Currently in the hands of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), identification may still take up to six more months due to inconclusive results.
DNA was used in an effort to determine the identity, but nothing valuable was found.
The remains were located in Huerfano County but determined to be a Costilla County case, so Costilla Sheriff’s Sgt. Paul Quintana assisted the Huerfano County Sheriff in recovery activities. Quintana is reportedly in charge of the investigation, with assistance from the CBI and the El Paso County Coroner. No details regarding clothing or other items found with the body are available, since this is still an open investigation.
Two men from Costilla County are on the missing list, but there is no official connection with either one, according to Costilla County Undersheriff Ricky Rodriguez.
Two still missing
The sheriff is also seeking the public’s assistance in locating William Scott Hurtado, 34, and Benjamin Charles Hamby, 29, who are still listed as missing. Hurtado reportedly left his home in Costilla County, headed to California for work. He has not been seen or heard of since.
Hamby went with another individual into the mountains on March 30 and still has not contacted his family or a girlfriend who filed a missing persons report.
Persons with information may call the Costilla County Sheriff at 719-672-0673 or CSP Dispatch at 719-589-5807.
