Senior centers seek funding

CONEJOS — As the population ages, demands on senior services grow.
People from both the Antonito Senior Citizens and Northerners Seniors approached the Conejos Board of County Commissioners last Thursday seeking financial assistance.
In Antonito, the center is reorganizing after the death of longtime director Virginia Sylvester and applications are being sent in for grants that had been received before.
Current Director Chris DeHerrera said the building is aging along with its occupants and needs some work, especially money for essential renovations. The center asked commissioners for $10,000 to pay for new restrooms.
In La Jara, Director Lynette DePriest said the center has increased its meal service and service to the community. Grants are being sought and $7,000 has been received, so the center is working with the Anschutz Foundation for more. With only $10,000 in savings, the center is hoping that foundation will send in $6,000.
A county-donated van is a life saver, she concluded, but more help is needed.
