Sheriff’s Office helps rescue man with leg injury along Conejos River

CONEJOS COUNTY — Conejos County Sheriff’s deputies and Conejos County Ambulance responded to a report of a man who had fallen down an embankment along the Conejos River above the Aspen Glade Campground on April 23.

Kirk Petross, 65, from Groves, Texas, and his wife were walking along the river when he fell down a steep embankment to the river's edge.

After the fall, he was not able to walk due to a possible broken leg. His wife stabilized him and then walked out to the highway. She flagged down two truck drivers who called 911 and assisted Petross.

The sheriff’s office and ambulance were assisted by the Colorado State Patrol, Antonito Fire Department, and the Colorado Department of Transportation. Working together, emergency personnel carried Petross from the river to the campground. He was transported by ambulance to the Conejos County Hospital.
