Trojans and Miners trade blows

ANTONITO — On Friday afternoon Antonito hosted Creede for two varsity games that had similar outcomes but on either side of the spectrum. Antonito’s girls defeated Creede 61-31 and Creede’s boys defeated Antonito 60-30.

Antonito’s girls got back to their winning ways since having fallen to Kim/Branson a week ago when they added a win over Cimarron that weekend up next was Creede. Creede was riding a three game streak before facing Antonito.

The game showed signs of things going Antonito’s way very quickly as the teams were already separated by 11 points at the end of the first quarter. The half opened it up to a 24-point lead. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around Antonito had built a 57-21 lead and triggered a running clock.

The Trojans would close things out at 61-31 for their sixth win of the season.  Erykah Tallman led Antonito with 20 points earning all of them inside 20 feet. Joslyn Garcia hit 3 treys for Antonito in the first quarter and coasted the remainder of the game to add 13 points to the Trojan's total. For the Miners it was Chloe McComes with 11 points.

The boys game was set up for a pretty stark contrast. Creede entered Friday afternoon undefeated with a perfect 8-0 record with the number one spot in the preliminary rankings. Antonito on the other hand was still looking for their first win.

Antonito got off to a promising start opening up a 10-3 lead over the Miners. They weren’t able to maintain it however. As the first quarter was brought to a close the Trojans would find themselves behind 16-14. Creede would continue to build in the second with another 17 points. Antonito meanwhile suffered a disastrous second quarter where they only managed one basket for a 33-16 score at the half.

The Miners would continue to pour on until they too had eclipsed 35 points for a running clock before finally closing the game out 60-30 for their ninth straight win of the season. Casper Freedle punished the Trojans anytime he was given two much space on the perimeter hitting 4 from beyond the arc and tallying a team leading 20 points and 6 rebounds for the afternoon. Isaac Borchers was second in scoring for Creede with 13 points. Austin Abeyta carried the load for Antonito with 18 points.
