Veterans remember veterans

ANTONITO — The Conejos County VFW and American Legion are working on a permanent memorial to area veterans.
Many of the post members are Veterans Blvd. of Conejos County Tree Sponsors.
To sponsor a Maple Tree for a Family Veteran, past or present, call 719-376-5716.
The Honor Guard conducts military burials for departed comrades of Conejos County and assists other counties when requested.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4849 and American Legion Post 168 Honor Guard chain of command is a follows:
A commander, chaplain, sergeant at arms, bugler, rifle squad commander and seven riflemen, who are accompanied by two or three members of the respective service branch of the deceased.
After the 21-gun salute and Taps, the visiting service members fold the American Flag and present it to whoever the deceased family designates, usually a wife or mother.
The Honor Guard is normally as follows: Commander, Joe Chavez; Chaplain, Walter Perea; Sergeant at Arms, Orlando Gallardo, Bugler, Cletus Perea; Flag Guard, Herald Abeyta; Rifle Squad Commander, Le Roy Archuleta and Riflemen, Ancelmo Quintana, Valdeno Gallegos, Andrew Perea, Steven Perea and Jimmy Duran.
The Honor Guard is all volunteers.
