SAN LUIS— Jackie Wampler Jr., has been charged with 13 counts in connection to the shooting of a Costilla County deputy Aug. 7.
Deputy Keith Schultz responded to the home of Jackie Wampler Jr. in the Sangre De Cristo Ranches Subdivision of Forbes Park on a report of a possible burglary.
When Schultz arrived, he was met by the Wampler and “a short time later, and gunfire was exchanged between … Schultz and Wampler,” according to the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office.
That is when Schultz was injured and later transported to the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Wampler has been charged with criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree (two counts), criminal attempt to commit murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree (two counts), assault in the second degree, menacing and six counts of crime of violence.
He has not entered a plea and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 22 in Costilla County Court.
