San Luis is creating an outdoor plaza

SAN LUIS — The community, along with workers from Baha Construction and Ayres Associates, have been actively involved in constructing a new public plaza in San Luis.

According to Teddy Leinbach, Assistant Town Manager of San Luis, "The new San Luis Town Plaza is being constructed so that we have a centrally located gathering point within our small town. Whether locals are gathering for a party, vendors are setting up during our annual Santa Ana festival, or visitors need a place to rest after visiting the Stations of the Cross Shrine, we are excited to be able to provide a beautiful outdoor space to encourage more community development and social gathering in San Luis."

The Stations of the Cross are depicted in a series of bronze sculptures by internationally known San Luis artist Huberto Maestas. The Stations are a Catholic interpretation of Jesus Christ's last day on Earth.

The artwork is located along a three-quarter mile trail that climbs up the La Mesa de la Piedad y de la Misericordia. (the Hill of Piety and Mercy). The hike affords an experience of serenity, meditation, and reflection and ends at the chapel, La Capilla de Todos Los Santos (The Chapel of All Saints).

The Town of San Luis has been awarded $544,777 from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and $181,000 from the Colorado Department of Transportation to improve its Town Plaza. The Town was also awarded $25,000 from the Gates Family Foundation for a park or the plaza in 2020.
